Distance Learning Information
What is distance learning?
Distance learning is a way of learning remotely without being in the classroom. In the case of Gateway STEM Academy, we will be doing this using Google Classroom and other web based tools. Teachers will collaborate via email, telephone, use of video conferencing, and posting of content on google classroom or our COVID-19 webpage.
Why is my child doing distance learning?
During this time of uncertainty we need to continue to support to our students education and learning. This means that even when they can not attend school in person, they are still being provided with ample opportunities to continue their education. A structured system to ensure that they can be successful is also important, and will be provided for them by their classroom teacher.
Beginning Monday March 30, an email will be sent to parents by the classroom teacher with the instructional plan for the week, and all other aspects of learning. Teachers will continue to support students via email and telephone conversation, with the target of interacting with each student every day. Students in grades 3-6 will also have a school email address to be able to communicate with teachers via Google Classroom.
Are my children required to do this?
It is expected that teachers will interact with students and/or parents/guardians in some form or other on a daily basis. This interaction may occur in any of the following forms:
- Email exchange,
- Messaging service,
- Turning in assignments,
- Confirmed reading of messages
- Video conference,
- Returning of assignments
- Telephone call.
These interactions will be used to evaluate student engagement and determine daily attendance. Any student or family with three consecutive days of unexcused non-interaction will be considered truant and will be contacted by administration.
For grades K-6, interactions and attendance will be tracked by the classroom teacher. Teacher attendance will be monitored by having teachers check into an attendance file daily as well as through the monitoring of their interactions with students and families by school leadership.
When will we be back at school?
School will be starting again on September 8th. The first week of school will be dedicated to helping parents and students understand how they will be learning this fall. K-3rd grade students will start in person learning on September 10th. 4th-6th grade students will start in person learning on September 13th or 14th, depending on which cohort, A or B, they are in. Please call Gateway STEM Academy at 952-206-4050 if you have any questions.
